Translational Research Makes the KC Chamber's "Big 5"
After months of dialogue and dozens of meetings, the Greater Kansas City Chamber announced its “Big 5” ideas for the region and introduced the “Champions” who will lead the efforts for each.
Champion: Dr. Patrick James, Sr. Managing Partner,Quest Diagnostics, Chair, KC Area Life Science Institute.
The overarching goal is to make KC a nationally-recognized center for translational research. The five year goal is to raise $40 million to triple the recent $20 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) granted to area researchers and significantly expand the effort.
Thanks to the grant, researchers and clinicians from six regional institutions will collaborate to create a new multidisciplinary network to convert laboratory discoveries and clinical insights into new diagnostics, treatments and cures. The NIH grant currently includes KU Medical Center and the University of Kansas, Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, Saint Luke’s Health System, Truman Medical Center and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
“This could be transformative,” Dr. James says. “It’s a force for further economic collaboration…and an engine for economic growth that will touch all parts of our regional economy.”
